Today was Halloween, but I didn't do anything special for it. There was a Halloween party at a Matsue night club on Saturday, but I really don't like night clubs, so I didn't go. Instead, a got together with a few friends and chatted. That was more fun, I think, but I still want to see the pictures from the party. All my ALT frields dressed up in funny and weird costumes.

I didn't have any classes in the morning so I spent it readin a book about the foreign service. The amazing stories in the book have only made my desire to join the foreign service grow. I went and cleaned the road around Route 54 with the junior high school and high school students today. It gave me a chance to chat with students that went to Akagi JHS two years ago that I haven't seen in a long time. It was really nice.

Today was an average day at junior high school, but I was feeling lethargic all day long for some odd reason. We didn't do anything special in my favorite 9th grade elective English class, but just seeing those 3 girls' smiling faces cheered me up. I think I need more focus in my life. I have all these things I want to study, but I don't know where to start. I have to take things one step at a time, I suppose.

I taught the super cute kids at Kijima Elementary School again today. The classes were fun, as always, but I had the most fun playing with the kids during the breaks. We played dodgeball. When I was a kid, I didn't like sports at all, but now I know that playing sports is an important thing to do for your body.

I went and taught at Kijima Elementary School today. As always, I played with the super hyper kids there. I didn't do anything special, but I had a really fun time. Third period the Social Studies teacher, Mr. Shiraishi, drove me to the junior high school for the annual teachers' photo. I put on a suit for the picture, but of course afterwards I changed into a track suit, since it would be a little odd to teach elementary school kids in a suit.

This morning was a normal day at junior high school. I taught classes, read the news, and checked email, but in the afternoon I went to Iinan Hospital to have my annual checkup required for all town employees. The doctor said I looked fine, but the alanine transaminase (ALT) in my blood is a little high at 57. There is a tiny chance I might have hepatitis type B or C, so I am going back in a couple months for anothe test.

I went to Iinan Hospital with Signe this morning. She has a cold. I was there because I had to have my blood drawn for my annual check-up next week. After I did that we waited for over an hour for the doctor to see Signe for her cold. It was all good though because we got out of there with some sweet drugs. In the 9th grade class today my lines in the dialog we were reading was made for a girl, so Ms. Suyama made me speak like a girl during the dialog. The kids totally ate it up.

I went to teach at Iinan High School today, which is always fun for me. Leslie and I taught the lower-level 10th graders English class together. We talked about Halloween. She is an awesome teacher. The kids totally understood her lesson.Ms. Suyama wasn't here again today, so I taught the lower-level 9th grade elective English class by myself today. I almost felt like a real teacher.

Ms. Suyama was at a seminar in Matsue today, so Ms. Mishima and I had to teach the 8th and 9th graders alone today. Ms. Mishima was worried because Ms. Suyama is in charge of both those classes, but it actually went really well. The 9th graders were a little cold at first, so Ms Mishima told a funny story of her's and got everyone laughing. After that, things went swimingly.

Today in my always interesting 9th grade elective English class we talked about Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to the war-related Yasukuni Shrine yesterday. His visit to the shrine has upset both China and South Korea because Yasukuni Shrine is dedicated to the war dead including 14 Class-A war criminals. I read in a newspaper today that about half of Japanese polled think that his going to the shrine was a bad idea, but most Japanese don't really care one way or another.

Signe and I were stressed out today because of a tax problem we had. Back in 2002 I was unemployed for about 6 months, so I collected unemployment insurance for that time. That year at tax time, like I did every year before, I bought software to do my own taxes with. The problem was that the software didn't know (and neither did I) that the unemployment insurance I was collecting was taxable income, so now, so many years later, I not only have to pay the taxes I own, but all these years of interest as well. From now on I definitely am having my taxes done by a CPA. It might be a little pricey, but it is a whole less pricey than my dumb mistake.

Today was the first day of the second term mid-term exams. First period, while the seventh graders took their English test, I walked around the room looking for cheaters. I think that their average score on this test is going to be better than their average on last term's finals. Monday, the eighth and ninth graders take their English mid-terms. Good luck, everybody!

This morning Jane Doe, a 7th grader, gave me some habanero peppers that her father grew. Last year Jane's dad wanted to buy these habanero seeds, but he couldn't read the English on the websites to order them, so I ordered them for him and gave them to him. Anyway, I showed them to the teachers and students today and gave them a little to try. You know, these habanero peppers, the Red Savina, are the hottest spice in the world, so watching their reactions as they tried the peppers was priceless.

I had four classes today, so I'm pretty tired. I don't really know why, but the kids were all really upbeat today. Signe left this morning to teach English for 2 days in Hamada. From now on every Wednesday I'll be coming home to an empty house. I don't think I could have lived alone here for 3 years without being able to come home to my loving wife every night.

Today went by fast! After teaching 3 classes, I went to the CATV building for a planning meeting for my TV show. The theme for November's show will be Thanksgiving. Most Japanese people don't know about Thanksgiving in America, so we will use our English conversation class TV show to introduce it to them. I miss those Thanksgiving dinners from my childhood.

Today was good because nothing especially bad happened. I spent most of my free time writing and posting this month's Trev Report. I can't believe that I have been writing the Trev Report for just about 9 years now. I have a lot of good memories, but it is easy for me to forget. It always makes me feel good when I look back and read those old reports. I have a good life.
Hello everyone and welcome once again you your monthly Trev Report wherein you shall find musings about the goings on of Trevor Menagh in these carefree times. And now on with the report!
Trev's Lovelife --------------- Signe got a new job in Hamada, a city about 1 1/2 hours drive from our house, for two days a week. She also got her old job at Miyoshi High School back for another two days a week. That is great news for us here. The extra income will go towards our debts. The only downside to the new situation is that since Hamada is a good distance away, and she is teaching in the evenings there, she stays over in Hamada for one night each week. It's not so bad, but still a downside. Besides that we are just living life over here. We are both getting over a cold, so we didn't do much last weekend, but most weekends we hang out with people in nearby Unnan. Life is going pretty smooth for the most part.
Trev's Study ------------ Ever since the new school semester has started and I have classes to teach everyday, my rigid study schedule that carried me through the summer days has been thrown asunder. I am slowly getting back into the swing of things, but I sometimes feel overwhelmed with it all. I am working through a management textbook I bought, which is insightful, but only scratches the surface of the field. When I am reading the book, I can't help but think of how easy it is to become a bad manager. It takes a focused effort to manage well. I just hope I can rise up to that level. I am trying to read the news everyday as well. Before this summer I almost never read the news, with the exception of technology news or articles specific to something I was looking into. I have learned a lot about the world just from reading news sites like the Christian Science Monitor and The Economist, but I haven't made time to read them all the way through. I try to cover the major international news stories at the very least. My Japanese, though has been going to pot, though. Fortunately for me though, I just got the application for the 2005-2006 Shizuoka Translation Contest. The application has a lot of stuff to translate in it, so I have set off to dedicate part of my free time to working on that. I prefer to not work at home, so I try to do most of this at work, but sometimes that just isn't possible. In all honesty, I am quite lucky to have a job where I can afford to do so much, but I suppose that I will eventually have to develop a work ethic at home sometime...
Trev's Work ----------- Work is picking up. I visited the two local elementary schools this month for the first time since the spring. All the super cute little kids are still super cute and still packed full of insane amounts of excess energy. I love teaching at elementary schools, but it really works me to the bone. No free time there. Speaking of elementary schools, next year I intent to apply for a job here in Shimane where I would be teaching at elementary schools full time. It is a competitive position, so I am not sure I will get it, but I would love to have it. It would mean that Signe and I would be locked in for at least another two years in Shimane, which would be great. I know I could get another job outside the JET Programme, but I would rather stay in the Programme as long as I can, since the workload is small, and the pay is the best in Japan. Signe is trying for the Programme again this year, so hopefully she will get in, too. The JET Programme is a great thing to do if you want to get out there and change up your life. I highly recommend applying for it.
Trev's Computers ---------------- My computers are running as well as they ever were. Actually, I got a virus this month, and started using virus protection software for the first time in my life. This means one of two things: I am old or I have become technically inept. Unfortunately, it seems to be the latter. I was in class the other day and one of the English teachers wanted to use a projector connected to her laptop in class. Of course, I said it was easy to do, so we brought it and set it up, but I couldn't get it to display... I was SO embarrassed and ashamed. After class, the social studies teacher showed us al you have to do is press F10. The SOCIAL STUDIES teacher knows more about computers than I do. I am officially retarded. Three years of not programming has turned me into a luddite. It is quite annoying. Anyway, I have started playing Achaea, the text-based massively multiplayer online role playing game. I usually jump on and goof around for a little bit each night. Mostly it is just mindless fun, I enjoy taking my mind off things for a little while with it. If you want to play, send me a message when you get on. My character's name is Ilimlza. This month is a big deal for my blog. It has been one full year since I had started posting my journal in Japanese and English along with a Kanji-of-the-day on the web. I know very few people actually read it, but I feel that it has helped me keep up my limited Japanese writing skills at the very least. This month also marks the one month anniversary of my seldomly-listened-to audioblog! I am trying to improve my reading and speaking skills with it...and I am an attention-whore.
Trev's Entertainment -------------------- Thanks to the wonder that is BitTorrent (a peer-to-peer file-sharing program) Signe and I have been able to keep up with our favorite shows in the US. The first parts of Stargate SG-1 Season 9, Stargate Atlantis Season 2, and the most awesome Battlestar Galactica Season 2 just ended, and Lost Season 2 and Desperate Housewives Season 2 just started. That along with 4 shots of The Daily Show each week keeps our US TV addiction at bay. One thing I will have to do when I eventually return to the US for good is get back into anime. Join a club or something. That is something I really miss. It was always such a big part of who I was, I miss not having it.
Trev's One Point Japanese Lesson -------------------------------- So you want to learn some Japanese? That's great! Let's review how to conjugate i-adjectives:
So an i-adjective like ooki-i (big) is conjugated like this: present positive: ooki-i past positive: ooki-katta present negative: ooki-kunai past negative: ooki-kunakatta

Today was good because my cold went away. Although,I did have to teach 4 classes back-to-back though. The theme for today's ever interesting 9th grade elective English B class was the revising of the pacifistic Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. It states that Japan will forever renounce war, and that it will not maintain armed forces. Recently, the Japanese Diet have been talking about revising this amendment. What do you think about it? Check out the actual text: Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
Journal for 2005-10-5 Wed.. Weather: Cloudy Plan: Akana Ele.
I had a cold on Friday, but it hadn't turned bad yet. The kids at Akana Ele. were just as hyper as the kids at Kijima Ele. I had a lot of energy when I was teaching classes, but during the breaks, instead of playing with the kids I rested in the teacher's room. Teaching at elementary schools is my favorite part of the job, so next year I am going to try for an elementary school-only ALT position. I'll do my best next year, too! Monday was my super cold day! I felt fine in the morning...or so I thought! I was teaching the 9th graders in the 1st period when suddenly I got a headache, and a fever. The Cold demon hath returnth! 2nd period was free for me, but I sat at my desk just getting worse. I had a temp. of 37.5 degrees so I went home for the day. I went to see Dr. Wada in Akana. In the afternoon all I did was take my meds. and sleep. Tuesday, my cold was slowly fading away. I only taught one class, but for saftey's sake I went home after lunch. I have lost my focus this week. I want to study hard like I did in summer vacation starting next week. My plan to become a Foreign Service Officer seems like a a dream of the distant future, so it is difficult for me to continually pump myself up for it. Today was the City/County New Player Sports Tournies so only the Brass Band students and the 9th graders came to school today. I still have a cold, but my fever is gone, my head feels OK, and I have stopped sweating as much. The medicine that Dr. Wada gave me really seems to have helped, although it tastes pretty disgusting. I have stopped exercising because my stomach still hurts, but if I am feeling better tomorrow, I will start it up again.
