Elementary school visits are always fun, but today was a little tough. You see, I caught a cold! When I was talking with the principal yesterday he mentioned, "It's getting colder. Have you caught a cold yet?" I answered that I usually get a cold when the season changes, but I haven't gotten one this fall yet. So, the next day when I woke up with serious muscle aches I was all like, "Son of a..." Man, I have bad luck.

Today and tomorrow I am doing English activities at Kijima Elementary School. English in junior high school and English at elementary school are very different. In junior high school we use text books, take notes, and have tests, but in elementary school we don't have any of those things. Mostly we play games, sing songs, and learn with our bodies. I ate lunch with the 6th grades, whose names I am working on memorizing.

Today was really busy. I worked all day. I had two classes in the morning, and after that I had to write a short essay to use in the 9th grade elective English class. Then, I had to create some food picture cards with our new laminator. When that was done, I had to translate an article about Halloween for the local Iinan newsletter. Feel free to read it: Have you ever wondered how Halloween began? The origins of today's celebrations on October 31st marks the beginning of the Celtic new year when the crops were harvested to prepare food for the long, dark winter. October 31st was also the eve of the festival of Samhain. Samhain was a joyful harvest festival that marked the end of the old year and the beginning of the new one. It was a time for paying homage to the sun god Baal who had provided the people with ripened grain for the upcoming winter. The Samhain festival marked the transition from life to death, and because the lives of the Celts were deeply intertwined with nature, the death of the world around them became associated with human death. It was believed that the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead were thinnest on Samhain. Therefore, the living were able to communicate with their deceased loved ones, but both good and evil spirits were able to travel between the worlds. To scare the evil spirits away, the Celts dressed up in ghoulish costumes and paraded around their neighborhoods. They also carved faces into turnips and lit them with candles. In the United States turnips were replaced with pumpkins. That is why the pumpkin is widely regarded as a symbol of modern-day Halloween. Let's enjoy Halloween together!

Today was busy. I taught 4 classes. I have another 4 tomorrow, too. 4 classes a day is tough, but I still have time to read the news. In my first job after college I didn't have any free time. I worked for 9 to 10 hours a day, and most Saturdays as well. Working those long hours eventually made me depressed. My current situation is much better.

I taught three classes today, but I wasn't busy at all. After I finsihed reading The Christian Science Monitor newspaper web site, I read the Foreign Policy magazine web site. That magazine has a lot of articles that make me think. I want to read more publications on foreign affairs/international relations/etc., but I don't know many good sources.

Today was a normal day. I only taught two classes again today. I read the news most of the day. Actually, before my classes I prepared a bunch of things we used in the classroom. It makes me feel good when I do work at work. Of course, having time to study is important, but when I am working it makes me feel as if my job has a purpose.

Today was a good day. I only taught two classes. I always like the 9th grade elective English B class. The theme for today was hiking. We talked about the times I went hiking as a boy. Last weekend I went to a party at another ALT's house, but I was acting all anti-social and stuff. I'm sorry that I was acting rude.

I had a chance to read the news and study all day today becasue I didn't have any classes. I learned a lot, but I also got the computer programming itch, which I hadn't felt for a long time. It was because I had to do some changes to the Shimane JETs! Web Site. I wrote a Perl script that allows another JET to update the Shimane JET Community Service Site through a web browser. It was really fun!

The 7th grade boys were being very rude today. During English class they were passing notes making fun of other kids, not listening at all, and being very disruptive. I got mad, but there is nothing I can do by myself. So, after class I talked to the 7th grade homeroom teacher. He is talking with the bad students right now.

Today was good. I only had two classes. The kids were happy, and that made me happy too. When I was in the teacher's room, I spent my time writing a new article for the Black Taxi. My previous article was poorly written, so in order to practice my writing skills, I have decided to write more. I'll do my best! I want to get better before the Foreign Service Written Exam.

I wrote an article for this month's Black Taxi, the Shimane Prefecture ALT Newsletter. I read the article today. I have become aware of the fact my writing sucks! My English writing level is that of a grade school student. I had no idea. I thought that I wrote good stuff in college, but it seems as if I have lost that skill.

Today was the Akagi JHS Sports Day Festival. It was a shame that it rained in the morning, but fortunately the sun showed its face after lunch. My job was the same as always, the cameraman. I took a lot of pictures. This is my last Akagi JHS Sports Day. In the three years I have been here, this one was the best. That made me really happy. Everyone did a great job.

Today was the rehersal for tomorrow's Sports Day Festival. I spent most of the day standing outside watching the rehersal. It looks like we will have some fun tomorrow. In my free time, I finally got a chance to read the news. I am going to continue my studies next week if I have time. I don't know why, but as of late I haven't been very motivated to do much of anything.

School was cancelled yesterday because of Typhoon Nabi, so Signe and I went into Miyoshi to do some shopping. We didn't really do anything after that. I feel a bit guilty about lazing around all day. I have to write next month's TV English Conversation Class show script today. Last month's was a little too perverse, so I think I'll make this month's one a bit more tame.
Hello everyone and welcome once again to your monthly Trev Report, wherein I talk about what I have been doing for the last month. And now on with the report!
Trev's Lovelife --------------- Signe has returned from her part-time job teaching English in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Unfortunately, she is currently unemployed, but she is working on some ideas that will bring in some extra money for us. There is no big rush, though. We are not in any desperate need for cash these days.
Trev's Work ----------- Just in the last week, things have been picking up at work as the 2nd term of Junior High School is beginning. During the long summer vacation, I came to work everyday and spent my time studying various things for the Foreign Service Written Exam. I finished studying about the 43 presidents of the US, and have made some inroads on studying the many countries of the world. Much of my time has been spent reading various news sites, though. I have found that a very good way to learn about world events and history is (shock!) reading the news. The main news site I read is the Christian Science Monitor at http://www.csmonitor.com/ , although I also read the Economist ( http://www.economists.com/ ), and some others at times as well. I am getting quite used to reading text on a computer screen for long periods at a time. That was something I was never very good at before. I was always impressed with people that could read ebooks for long stretches. I have always preferred paper books, but I could be convinced to make the change to ebooks now. In any case, with school picking back up, I am finding it harder and harder to make time to study at work. Work, of course, must take a front seat. I will continue to fit it in when I have time, though.
Trev's Science Fiction ---------------------- Both Signe and I are really into Science Fiction. We have been following shows like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (the current favorite), and The 4400, which recently ended its 2nd season. We are able to watch current US TV shows because of BitTorrent and tracker sites like http://www.mininova.org/ . It is nice to be able to watch new episodes every week. We just finished watching Dark Angel, as well. I thought the 1st season was good, but the 2nd and final season was mind-numbingly horrible. We also watched all of Tru Calling, which could have been good, but they took way to long to find a good non-episodic plotline to follow before it was cancelled. Currently we are working through Futurama, which is a really fun show to watch. I am still reading the _Night's Dawn Trilogy_ by Peter F. Hamilton. I am almost finished with _A Second Chance At Eden_, his series of short stories set in the past of the Confederation universe (the Night's Dawn book take place in 2611). I really like these books, they are a real fun read, but I sometimes feel like I should be reading news or history instead. I haven't really put a great effort into turning my living room into a place conducive to studying though.
Trev's Friends -------------- All the new people in Unnan are great. We hang out with them often. In fact, last weekend we all went to a BBQ party in Daito. I really feel as though my network f friends has grown since my first year. That first year Signe and I really didn't put forth too much effort to make a lot of friends in the JET community, but since then I think that we have made some really good friendships. I will truly miss the day I have to depart from Shimane.
Trev's Computers ---------------- I have been working hard to keep up my blog at http://www.trevreport.org/blog/ and http://trevmex.livejournal.com/ . I am trying out an idea I had a while back and am making an audioblog. That is, I am speaking my blog after I write it and I post an MP3 file of it for download. I find it a good way to practice speaking Japanese, since my studies have petered off some since I have been focusing on studying for the Foreign Service Written Exam.
Trev's One Point Japanese Lesson -------------------------------- So you want to learn Japanese, huh? That's great! How about looking into some adjectives!
There are two types of adjectives in Japanese. "i-adjectives" and "na-adjectives," or Nounal Adjectives. Let's look at the first type again.
na-adjectives are called that because they all end in "na." For example:
To conjugate these na-adjectives into the past tense is really easy! All you have to do is change the "na" into "deshita:"
kirei deshita - was not beautiful hen deshita - was not fun suki deshita - was not big Can you guess what the past tense of kantan-na is?
Until next time, keep studying and work hard!
Well, that's about it for this month. If you want to read (or listen) about my daily goings on in English OR Japanese check out my blog. Drop me a line sometimes. I always enjoy hearing from you.

Typhoon #14 is coming here this afternoon. All the students were sent home at noon. The school staff have to stay here until 3 pm. The school is closed tomorrow. The staff will stay at home. If we are needed, the vice principal will call us. I taught my first 9th grade elective English class all by myself today. There are only 3 students, all girls, in the class, so I think we can make it very informal.

I taught my first classes of my 3rd year today. I have been doing the same job for the last two years, so there are no real surprises for me anymore. When I wasn't teaching, I was reading the news. It was easy to study during summer vacation, but now that my schedule is peppered with classes it is harder to maintain a regular study routine. I might have to start studying after school.

Today was the 4th Annual Iinan HS/Akagi JHS/Tonbara JHS English Recitation Contest. I was made the head judge this year. All the presenters did a great job with their speeches! Afterwards, I went to lunch at a local diner with Leslie, the ALT from Iinan HS, Alicia, the ALT from Tonbara JHS, and my wife, Signe. Leslie is a very interesting person.

I studied a lot of different things today. My buddy Matt says that it is best if you switch what you are working on after 15 minutes, so I downloaded MinTimer from the Internet. Every 15 minutes a sound goes off and allows me to keep track of when I need to switch subjects. I started studying the US States today. I am reading more news, too, but I read really slow, which presents a problem.
